Albuquerque’s Economic Landscape: A Focus on Small Business Growth

Albuquerque’s economic vitality is increasingly driven by the growth and success of its small businesses. Recognizing this, the city has implemented several initiatives to support entrepreneurs and foster a thriving business environment.

City Initiatives Bolstering Small Businesses

The Small Business Office (SBO), established in 2019, serves as a central resource for local entrepreneurs. It offers assistance with navigating city processes such as permitting and licensing, and provides connections to relevant city agencies. This support aims to streamline operations for small business owners, enabling them to focus on growth and innovation.

Another significant program is Job Training Albuquerque (JTA), a partnership between the city and Central New Mexico Community College (CNM). As of July 2025, JTA has enrolled over 3,400 workers from 374 local small businesses, resulting in the creation of more than 1,500 new jobs and an added earning power of $74.8 million for local employees. Participants have reported an average wage increase of approximately 24.76%, highlighting the program’s impact on workforce development.

Economic Trends and Workforce Development

Albuquerque’s unemployment rate has remained relatively stable, with the most recent data indicating a rate of 4.3% as of April 2026. This stability reflects the city’s resilient economy and the effectiveness of its workforce development programs.

In September 2025, Mayor Tim Keller announced the ‘Campaign for Growth,’ an ambitious initiative aiming to create 1,000 new jobs by 2028. This campaign focuses on empowering workers, supporting small businesses, and investing in high-growth sectors such as film, technology, biosciences, aerospace, and tourism. The goal is to build a sustainable and inclusive economy that benefits all residents.

Support from Economic Organizations

The Albuquerque Regional Economic Alliance (AREA) plays a crucial role in supporting local businesses through its Business Retention and Expansion program. AREA offers services including business outreach, workforce and talent attraction tools, public relations, and marketing support. Additionally, AREA assists companies in accessing local incentives and facilitates connections to regional and state-level tax incentive and grant programs.

These concerted efforts by the city and its partners underscore Albuquerque’s commitment to fostering a robust economic environment where small businesses can thrive. By providing essential resources and support, Albuquerque continues to position itself as a city of opportunity for entrepreneurs and job seekers alike.
