Albuquerque’s economic landscape is significantly bolstered by the presence of Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB). Recent reports highlight KAFB’s substantial contributions, underscoring its role as a cornerstone of the local economy.
Economic Impact
In 2024, KAFB injected $7.5 billion into the Albuquerque area, accounting for 12% of the region’s total economic activity. This impact stems from various channels, including payroll, contracts, and local expenditures. Notably, the base’s payroll reached $2.6 billion, reflecting its status as one of the state’s largest employers.
Job Creation and Local Business Support
KAFB’s operations support over 56,000 jobs in Albuquerque, encompassing direct employment and roles generated through its economic activities. The base awarded more than $1 billion in contracts to small businesses, fostering local entrepreneurship and innovation.
Infrastructure and Community Engagement
Significant investments in infrastructure, such as the construction of a new Defense Threat Reduction Agency building and renovations at the Gibson Child Development Center, further demonstrate KAFB’s commitment to the community. These projects not only enhance the base’s facilities but also stimulate the local construction industry.
Col. Justin Secrest, 377th Air Base Wing and installation commander, emphasized the base’s integral role: “Kirtland is not just a base — it’s a strategic engine. And the power behind that engine is our mission and those of our incredible mission partners.”
As Albuquerque continues to evolve, Kirtland Air Force Base remains a steadfast contributor to the city’s economic vitality, exemplifying the symbiotic relationship between military installations and their host communities.
